A Standard Kinetic Energy Reservoir in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a comprehensive sample of X-ray observations of 41 γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, as well as jet opening angles, θj for a subset with measured jet breaks. We show that there is a significant dispersion in the X-ray fluxes, and hence isotropic X-ray luminosities (LX,iso), normalized to t = 10 hr. However, there is a strong correlation between LX,iso and the beaming fractions, fb ≡ [1 − cos(θj)]. As a result, the true X-ray luminosity of GRB afterglows, LX = fbLX,iso, is approximately constant, with a dispersion of only a factor of two. Since ǫeEb ∝ LX , the strong clustering of LX directly implies that the adiabatic blastwave kinetic energy in the afterglow phase, Eb, is tightly clustered. The narrow distribution of LX also suggests that p ≈ 2, that inverse Compton emission does not in general dominate the observed X-ray luminosity, and that radiative losses at t < 10 hr are relatively small. Thus, despite the large diversity in the observed properties of GRBs and their afterglows the energy imparted by the GRB central engine to the relativistic ejecta is approximately constant. GRB efficiency and Possible Physical Processes Shaping the Early Afterglow
The discovery by Swift that a good fraction of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) have a slowly decaying X-ray afterglow phase led to the suggestion that energy injection into the blast wave takes place several hundred seconds after the burst. This implies that right after the burst the kinetic energy of the blast wave was very low and in turn the efficiency of production of γ-rays during the burst was ex...

The X-ray flux of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows monitored by the Swift satellite from January 2005 to July 2006 displays one to four phases of flux power-law decay. In chronological order, they are: the GRB tail, the 'hump', the standard decay and the post-jet-break decay. More than half of the GRB tails can be identified with the large-angle emission produced during the burst (but arriv...

Context. Clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst has been reported in the optical and X-ray. Aims. We investigate the possibility that a clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst exists in near infrared (J, H, K bands). We use observations of events occurring from 1997 to the end of 2007. Methods. We correct the gamma-ray burst afterglow light c...
متن کاملVery Strong TeV Emission as Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and following afterglows are considered to be produced by dissipation of kinetic energy of a relativistic fireball and radiation process is widely believed as synchrotron radiation or inverse Compton scattering of electrons. We argue that the transfer of kinetic energy of ejecta into electrons may be inefficient process and hence the total energy released by a GRB event ...
متن کاملBeaming in Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for a Standard Energy Reservoir
We present a comprehensive sample of all gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows with known distances, and we derive their conical opening angles based on observed broadband breaks in their light curves. Within the framework of this conical jet model, we correct for the geometry and we find that the gamma-ray energy release is narrowly clustered around ergs. We draw three conclusions. First, the centr...
